Renovation of low voltage switchboard for a data centre

Written by Baptiste Berthier | Jan 11, 2022 5:15:00 PM

Our client wanted to modernise its 20+ year old TITAN IV (IEC) switchboards by replacing obsolete equipment, in this case the circuit breakers, while ensuring the availability of spare parts.

The proper functioning of its electrical distribution equipment is crucial to ensure the continuity of service of a data centre in the banking environment.              The renovation of aging LV switchboards is a cost-effective solution to extend their service life while ensuring continuity of service, reliability and a high level of security without the need to replace the entire installation.

Modernising and sustaining its LV panels for the demanding data centre sector

Aware of the obsolescence of the circuit breakers and switches, the client chose to retrofit its LVBs in order to modernise and perpetuate its installation while renewing its stock of spare parts.

The retrofit of its equipment also guarantees continuity of service, limiting production stoppages and emergency interventions, increasing the reliability of its installation while reducing the risk of breakdowns and minimising outage times.

  • This renovation project involved 27 TITAN IV low voltage switchboards
  • 114 devices were modernised, ranging from 800 to 4000A
  • Up to 13 devices retrofitted in 3 shifts from 10pm to 7pm
  • Up to 33 intervention technicians took part in this large-scale project.

The interventions were carried out while respecting the constraints of limiting production stoppages and emergency interventions, while reducing the time of outages as much as possible.

COMECA Services: expert support throughout your project

The project was carried out by our teams of qualified technicians, all in compliance with the standards and deadlines as well as in accordance with the manufacturer's manufacturing rules. The client was also able to benefit from the support and expertise of our Engineering Department.

The following services were provided:

  • Audit of the LV Switchboards on site
  • Preparation and self-checking of the equipment
  • Control of the adequacy between the diagrams and the existing wiring
  • Adjustment of the equipment
  • Functional tests before retrofit
  • Removal of obsolete equipment
  • Installation of the new generation of circuit breakers with new energy monitoring functionality
  • Wiring of new devices
  • Functional tests after Retrofit
  • Assistance with commissioning
  • Documentary update

The equipment retrofit was carried out over a two-year period in 28 interventions. These interventions were carried out with the low-voltage switchgear disconnected, with disconnection times ranging from 4 hours to 21 hours.
