COMECA Middle East - Maintenance project

Written by Baptiste Berthier | Sep 7, 2022 9:30:00 AM

Our customer is a regional chemical company producing significant amounts of poly ethylene and associated products. Their complex also consists of a sulphur recovery and solidification plant, a water treatment plant, seawater cooling system, dock facilities and administrative buildings.

Comeca has supplied GALAXIS LV switchgear back in 2001 and all the switchgears are still operating and delivering power for the plant process. The customers operation and maintenance teams carry out maintenance activities on the switchgear during plant turnaround and Comeca used to supply spare parts and additional components whenever required.

During site visits in 2019 Comeca Middle East team convinced the customer about the importance of detailed check-up and maintenance by Comeca experts and after multiple discussions the customer decided to proceed with complete maintenance of GALAXIS switchgears during the 2022 turnaround.

The initial proposal was only switchgear maintenance and during the discussions Comeca highlighted the need of replacing obsolete components and Gemstart5 retrofit in order to extend the life and safe operation of the switchgear. Finally the project scope has been increased to cover switchgear maintenance, supply of spare parts, retrofit of obsolete components, Gemstart5 retrofit and third-party switchgear maintenance. This proactive approach and technical completeness helped Comeca ME to secure a significant maintenance contract.

Comeca ME mobilised its manpower along with service engineer colleagues from Comeca UK and Comeca Indonesia in order to complete the activities on time. Also supporting man power and test kits were hired locally in Qatar bringing value to the local economy. Coordinating the team from different entities and backgrounds to complete the activities at site for more than a month was a challenging task. With proper scheduling and coordination Comeca ME completed the job as per the schedule and work scope.

A detailed report was submitted to the end user including test reports and recommendations based on the inspection carried out during maintenance. One of the important findings was aged components in the switchgears, especially in drawers and the end user agreed to replace them all based on availability. Comeca ME will support our customer with necessary parts and engineering to replace the components and this will open another business opportunity for Comeca ME from a well executed maintenance job.
