Yamal LNG, one of the largest and most complex LNG projects in the world, has recently emerged in deepest Russia. Zoom on COMECA’s involvement in this $27 billion pharaonic project.

YAMAL LNG consists of construction of a huge liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant located in Russia’s Far North. Yamal is the biggest modular plant in the world and required extensive transportation infrastructure to be built, including a sea port and an international airport to welcome thousands of workers who achieved this project under extreme conditions.

Yamal LNG is 50.1% owned by Russian NOVATEK group, associated to France’s Total which owns 20%. The natural gas liquefaction plant building has been given to YAMGAZ a joint-venture composes of TECHNIP, SAMSUNG HEAVY INDUSTRY and JGC.

Selected by YAMGAZ, COMECA has been untrusted the design, the manufacturing and the delivery of 46 fixed distribution boards designed in Siemens Sivacon S4, which will feed the tracing (heating) of pipes. The Group also supervised the installation of all heat tracing panels which control the temperature of the carried fluids.

Given the technical complexity of the project and its achievement, YAGMAZ turned to COMECA with specific requirements: competences and proven experience in the Oil & Gas sector, flexible solutions or else capability to mobilise supervisors and teams in geographically remote area.

“Yamal LNG was a new opportunity to demonstrate our ability to manage cross-border projects among the most complex in the world” indicates Lucie Texerot, Marketing Manager at COMECA, before going on: « On the production side, our teams were fully involved and focused on a specific issue: the deployment of operational excellence in our factories. Switchboards were manufactured according to Lean Management methods, seeking to reach a better performance at all levels: productivity, quality, cost and time”.

Today in operation, Yamal should dramatically increase LNG production capacity in Russia.
